Basic EKG Course

This is an instructor-based, power point/ lecture driven course, followed by student practice with cardiac rhythms from real patients. This course is designed to improve basic cardiac rhythm identification skills and pharmacology knowledge for treating cardiovascular emergencies in the pre-hospital and emergency care setting.

(EMS) EKG Course:

Target Audience: Paramedics, EMT’s, MICN’s

Course length: 6 hours/ 6 EMS CE’s (Instructor Based)

(Non-EMS) EKG Course:

Target Audience: RN’s, Monitor tech, LVN’s, etc.

Course length: 4 hours/ 4 BRN CE’s

Course Content/ Objectives

  1. Describe the normal cardiac anatomy, physiology, and electrical conduction through the heart
  2. Identify and relate cardiac waveforms to the cardiac cycle
  3. Utilize a systematic process when approaching the interpretation of the EKG
  4. Identify:
    1. Normal and abnormal components on the EKG.
    2. Normal cardiac rhythms on a rhythm strip
    3. Cardiac dysrhythmias on a rhythm strip
    4. Ectopic beats
    5. Rhythms using the 5-step analysis method
  5. Discuss EMS Treatment Protocol Differences (Optional: for EMS EKG Course only)
